Six Respiratory Ventilators for Critical Care
Medtronic, Getinge (formerly Maquet), Drager, Hamilton, and GE are all primary suppliers of critical care ventilators in the United States.
So how does the Puritan Bennett™ 980 ventilator compare to these other high-acuity ventilators? In this blog post, we’ll discuss the features of the Puritan Bennett™ 980 ventilator and of five other ventilators available in the United States for patients in a critical care setting.
While not an exhaustive list of every ventilator available for sale, this summary presents each device in the manufacturer’s own words. Be sure to validate all features listed by the manufacturer with each supplier individually.
Medtronic Puritan Bennett™ 980 Ventilator
The Puritan Bennett™ 980 ventilator is engineered to help patients breathe more naturally.† Its main features include but are not limited to1:
Simple user interface — The user interface features a highly customizable display with intuitive screen navigation, as well as:
- Easy alarm management
- Trend presets for specific diseases
- Large display
Patient safety —When a patient is on a ventilator, you want to maintain the highest degree of ventilation that can be safely delivered. Certain safety features — like the features mentioned below — can help you maintain this high standard.
- Standby state with automatic patient detection
- Disconnect algorithm
- Occlusion detection algorithm
- 360-degree display of alarms
- Remaining battery percentage
- Monitoring parameter for ML/KG (or ML/PDW)
- Preset ML/KG in institutional defaults
- Automatic elevation of alarm level
Synchrony software — Synchrony tools help clinicians set the ventilator to adapt to their patients’ unique needs and help provide the appropriate level of support throughout the breath. Features include:
- PAV+™ software for patient directed breathing
- Leak Sync software
- IE Sync triggering (commercial availability pending)
- Vital Sync™ remote virtual patient monitoring capability
- Non-invasive display of patient work
Physical features
- Hot swappable batteries
- Battery power compressor for mobilization on patients
- Integrated filter
- Mobility of screen

Maquet Servo-i™* Ventilator
The Servo-i™* ventilator combines a high level of clinical performance for invasive, noninvasive, or neurally controlled ventilation with mobility and cost efficiency. Features include but are not limited to1:
Neurally Adjusted Ventilatory Assist (NAVA™*) — With NAVA™* mode, the electrical activity of the diaphragm (Edi) is captured, fed to the ventilator, and used to assist the patient’s breathing. Additional features include:
- Listens to the patient’s own respiratory signal
- Perceived as innovative
- Research and development dedicated to clinical trials to prove efficacy and drive adoption
Edi signal — The Edi signal is a diagnostic tool that monitors the electrical activity of the diaphragm (Edi). This provides useful information on respiratory drive, volume requirements, and the effect of your ventilatory settings — information that supports your decision for intubation or extubation.
Open Lung Tool — The Open Lung Tool™* provides an instrument for determining the effect of a ventilator intervention. It provides guidance for a successful recruitment maneuver.
Automode™* — You can set a controlled mode and let the ventilator adapt to the current patient situation, switching between controlled and supported breathing in connection with patient effort. The control mode is initiated after an operator set time-out.
Maquet Servo-u™* Ventilator
The Servo-u™* ventilator provides multiple options for protective ventilation in the ICU. It’s designed for all phases of ventilation from controlled to supported to noninvasive and spontaneous breathing trials. Features include but are not limited to2:
NAVA™* mode — The therapeutic workflow provides a resource for the clinician during all stages of NAVA™* mode therapy. Support tools are available for Edi catheter selection, calculation of the insertion length, catheter positioning, and NAVA™* mode preview to facilitate adjustment of NAVA™* mode settings.
Bedside Tools — These on-screen, context-based guidance tools, tutorials, and prompts help you make informed decisions:
- The Safety ScaleTM* tool allows for quick changes while providing clear feedback that helps you avoid unusual ranges for the category of patient that is being treated.
- On-screen tutorials are available to support you when applying settings and selecting ventilation modes.
- Access 72 hours of trend data or use the built-in recording feature to capture what just happened, as well as 15 seconds before and after recording was enabled.
- The alarm management system includes short texts that help you respond to alarms. Highlights let you know what values are affected and shortcuts take you directly to what needs change.

Drager Evita™* Infinity™* V500 Ventilator
The Evita™* Infinity™* V500 ventilator is designed for use in acute care respiratory support for adult, pediatric, and infant use. Features include but are not limited to3:
APRV Auto Release — This feature automatically optimizes Tlow to terminate expiration at an adjustable percentage of peak expiratory flow. This allows for the maintenance of end-expiratory lung volume and effective CO2 removal. When faced with changing respiratory mechanics and expiratory flow patterns, the Auto Release feature reacts accordingly.
SmartCare™* mode / PS — This feature incorporates an automated knowledge-based weaning protocol with the flexibility to individualize care through configurable patient parameters.
Variable PS — Variable PS generates random adjustments to the level of inspiratory pressure support. This variation simulates the naturally occurring variations of biological systems such as breathing.
Hamilton G5 Ventilator
The Hamilton G5 ventilator is designed for the most complex, critically ill patients in the ICU. Features include but are not limited to4:
- P/V Tool Pro for lung assessment and recruitment
- Transpulmonary pressure measurement
- High flow oxygen therapy
- IntelliCuff™* integrated cuff pressure controller
- Ventilation of adult, pediatrics, and neonates
GE Carescape™* R860 Ventilator
According to GE, navigating past, present, and future states of your ventilated patients is the foundation of the CarescapeTM* R860 user interface. Features include but are not limited to5:
Menu-free navigation — Interactive touchscreen slider controls of the master timeline in trend views reveal event-centric historical data that lets you take a snapshot into the past.
Customizable settings and predictive protocols — Examples include Measuring Functional Residual Capacity (FRC), nutritional assessment, and weaning support.
Lung protection strategy — GE’s Lung Protection tools calculate FRC, providing the clinician with data for determining the optimal PEEP setting for the patient.
Neonatal option — Specialized ventilation modes are included that help transition neonatal patients off of mechanical ventilation.
†Compared to conventional mechanical ventilation (VC, VC+, PC, PS).
